Warriors cruise,

PORTLAND — The Warren-
ton Lady Warriors scored 11 runs
in their first at-bat, on their way to
an easy 23-2 win at Portland Chris-
tian Tuesday in Lewis & Clark
League softball action.
Landree Miethe had five of
Warrenton’s 14 hits, to go with two
doubles, four RBIs and four runs
scored.
Rachel Dyer had two hits and
drove in five, Niqui Blodgett and
Melia Kapua scored three runs
apiece, and Blodgett had another
easy game in the circle, pitching
a complete-game two-hitter, with
nine strikeouts and three walks.
The Warriors also drew 12
walks and two hit batters, as they
improve to 9-3 overall, while the
Royals drop to 0-8.
Loggers cage
the ’Cats, 16-4

CLOVERDALE — Another
blowout victory for the Knappa
softball team Tuesday, as the
Lady Loggers pounded their way
past Nestucca, 16-4, in Northwest
League action at Cloverdale.
The Loggers have won their
last four games (all against league
competition) by a combined
61-22.
Knappa freshman pitcher
Madelynn Weaver allowed just
two hits, with 10 strikeouts and
one walk. All four Nestucca runs
were unearned.
Offensively, Jaden Miethe
was 3-for-5 with a double and
three RBIs; Kaitlyn Truax was
1-for-1 with a two-run homer, and
walked four times; and Weaver
was 2-for-5 with a three-run home
run.
Knappa (4-0 in league) hosts
the winless Bobcats (0-6) for a
doubleheader Friday.

TILLAMOOK — The Astoria
baseball team opened a stretch of
three games in three days the best
way possible Tuesday — a five-in-
ning, 11-0 shutout at Tillamook.
Astoria starter Olaf Englund
finished off the Cheesemakers
with just 55 pitches, striking out
seven with no walks and just one
hit allowed.
The Fishermen had all the runs
they would need with two in the
top of the first. They tacked on
four runs in the second and five in
the fourth.
Eight different Astoria players
had hits. Jasyn Gohl topped the
list, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Fridtjof Fremstad was 2-for-2,
with two doubles, two RBIs and
two runs scored.
Kyle Strange also scored
twice, as did Englund and Tristin
Wallace.
The No. 8-ranked Fishermen
are 4-0 atop the Cowapa League
standings, and play a makeup
game today at Valley Catholic
(3-1), followed by a single game
Thursday at home vs. Tillamook
(0-4).

Astoria wins a wild one

SEASIDE — It wasn’t your
ordinary 3-2 game Tuesday at
Broadway Field, where Seaside
hosted Astoria in the first Clatsop
Clash softball meeting of the 2017
season.
For starters — because of inju-
ries and some additional school
disciplinary action — the Lady
Fishermen only had eight eligible
players.
And while Seaside pitcher Jetta
Ideue tossed a great game, the
Gulls gave up an avoidable run in
the top of the sixth inning, which
proved to be the difference in a 3-2
Astoria victory.
“Pretty entertaining for a Clat-
sop Clash,” said Astoria coach
Kent Israel Jr. “Jetta pitched a
great game. McKailyn (Rogers)
pitched well for us and we played
pretty good defensively — we just
couldn’t hit the ball.”
Ideue gave up four hits, with
11 strikeouts and two walks, while
Rogers allowed two hits in six
innings of work, with seven strike-
outs and three walks, before Julia
Norris took over in the seventh.
The Lady Fishermen scored all
three of their runs in the top of the
sixth.
Hailey Ranta reached on an
infield error and later stole sec-
ond, with the throw getting past
the shortstop and also the center
fielder, allowing Ranta to score all
the way from first.
Abi Danen followed with a sin-
gle, Rogers drew a walk, and Nor-
ris belted a line drive to deep cen-
ter, with the ball hopping over the
fence for a ground-rule double,
scoring Danen.
After a second out, the Gulls
could have easily recorded the
third out by simply walking Asto-
ria’s No. 8 hitter, Brooklynn
Hankwitz.
(With just eight players in the
lineup, Astoria’s No. 9 slot was an
automatic out.)
Had the Gulls intentionally
walked Hankwitz with first base
open, the inning would have been
over, with the No. 9 slot represent-
ing the third out.
But Seaside pitched to Hank-
witz, and Astoria got lucky, as a
wild pitch scored Rogers with the
third run.
“That’s just an odd situation for
a coach to be in, because it rarely
happens,” Israel said.
Defensively, the Fishermen
paid the price with just two out-
fielders, as a fourth-inning single
up the middle by Seaside’s Alyssa
Goin went all the way to the fence,
resulting in a triple.
But the Gulls were unable to
score in the inning, just as Asto-
ria was unable to score in the top
of the fourth, when the Fishermen
had runners at second and third,
with no outs.
Seaside still had a chance in
the bottom of the seventh, when
freshmen Ruby Davis and Emma
Meyer had back-to-back singles
with one out.
Freshman Jessica Angulo-Joli
followed with an infield hit that
turned into an error, scoring Davis,
but Meyer — representing the
tying run — was eventually tagged
out by Astoria catcher Caitlyn
Houghan in a rundown between
third and home, ending the game.
Having just eight fielders “hurt
us twice,” Israel said, “on (Goin’s)
triple, and another time on a fly
ball that normally would have
been caught.”
Astoria will be back at full
strength Thursday, when the Fish-
ermen host Valley Catholic, 4 p.m.
at CMH Field.

Scappoose Indians defeat Gull golfers

BANKS — Scappoose golfer
Nathan Mapes shot a 1-over par 37
on the front nine Tuesday, on his way
to a 77 to take medalist honors in a
dual meet win over Seaside at Quail
Valley Golf Course.
The Indians finished with a 324
to Seaside’s 355, in a battle between
the two teams that have won the last
13 Cowapa League boys golf titles.
For the first time this season, the
Gulls had three players in the 80s.
Jackson Kunde led Seaside with an
85 (44-41), followed closely by Sam-
son Sibony (88) and Mason Shamion
(89). Connor Merrell added a 93 and
Colby Lupfer shot 101 for Seaside.
“It was great to see three kids in
the 80s today,” said Seaside coach
Jim Poetsch, “Mason has done it
twice in a row now and Samson has
done it two of the last three matches.
A few weeks ago neither had ever
done it.
“Those two had our only birdies
of the day,” with Shamion chipping
in on the eighth and Sibony on the
par-5 10th.
“After struggling a little on the
front, Jackson was able to stay with
Mapes on the back nine,” Poetsch
said. “Mapes is one of the top two
players in our league right now, so
that should give Jackson some con-
fidence heading into the stretch
run of our season. While we didn’t
post a team low today for the first
time, I see signs of our hard work
starting to pay off. We didn’t strike
the ball particularly well, but we
made some great shots around the
greens and that is how you shoot
lower scores.”
The Gulls host the 11-team Sea-
side Invitational at Gearhart Golf
Links Monday.
Girls Golf
Scappoose wins Invite
BANKS — Astoria, Scappoose,
Tillamook and Valley Catholic
showed up Monday for the Banks
Invitational girls golf tournament at
Quail Valley.
Banks was the host school,
although the Braves do not have a
girls golf team this year.
Using a modified Stableford scor-
ing system, Scappoose was the team
winner with 237 points, followed by
Astoria with a 220.
The Lady Fishermen had
five players scoring over the nine-
hole event, led by Sam Hemsley’s
54.
Jenna Travers and Sadie Wool-
dridge both finished at 60, followed
by Sarah Lertora (63) and Kristen
Travers (66).
Morgan Hall of Scappoose was
the top golfer, with a 47.
CLOVERDALE — The
Upset Special of the Day in Ore-
gon high school baseball took
place Tuesday in Cloverdale,
where Nestucca scored a 2-1 win
over visiting Knappa in a North-
west League contest.
It was only the third loss in the
last 82 league games for the Log-
gers, now 79-3 in league over the
last four years. Knappa lost to the
Bobcats last year, as well.
“It was a great high school
baseball game,” said Knappa
coach Jeff Miller, following a
game that lasted just over one
hour. “Their first two batters of
the game were a walk and a bunt
single, followed by a base hit and
a sacrifice.
“They had their two runs, and
did nothing the rest of the game,”
he said. “But we didn’t do any-
thing, either. (The Bobcats)
played flawless defense. We only
struck out once, but we were just
hitting it right at ’em.”

Link went the distance, allow-
ing just two hits — a double by
Reuben Cruz off the top of the
fence in the fourth inning, fol-
lowed by a run-scoring single
by Dale Takalo. Link threw 83
pitches.
Takalo and Mason Hoover
combined on a four-hitter for
the Loggers, who will look to
avenge Tuesday’s loss in a dou-
bleheader vs. Nestucca Friday at
Knappa.

PORTLAND — Portland
Christian snapped a 1-1 tie
with six runs in the bottom of
the fourth inning Tuesday, in
a 7-1 win over Warrenton in a
Lewis & Clark League base-
ball game.
The Royals’ Bailey Duck-
ett highlighted the big inning
with a three-run home run,
while Kale’o Kapua had two
of Warrenton’s five hits off
Duckett, who pitched a com-
plete game with 12 strikeouts
and no walks.
“We’re taking too many
good pitches, and swinging
at a few too many bad ones,”
said Warrenton coach Lennie
Wolfe. “That can be said of
any team that strikes out 12
times.
“That
being
said,
we’re still playing well,”
he said. “We only had
one error on defense, which
didn’t cost us, and Jake (Mor-
row) pitched a nice game. We
just have to start hitting the
ball.”
BANKS — “The best way I can
describe it, it was a like a heavyweight
fight that went the distance,” said Seaside
coach Joel Dierickx, following his team’s
8-7 loss at Banks Tuesday night.
The game was highlighted by five lead
changes, with the final lead change coming
in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off
single by Hayden Vandehey of Banks with
the bases loaded.
Seaside held a 1-0 lead after one inning;
the Braves scored twice in the second to
take a brief lead, before the Gulls scored
four in the top of the third; and Banks
scored two in the fourth and two more in
the sixth to go in front, 6-5.
Not to be outdone, Seaside scored
twice in the top of the seventh to take a
7-6 advantage.
But with one out in the bottom of the
seventh, the Braves rallied with a hit bat-
ter, followed by a second out, then a sin-
gle, a walk, an intentional walk to load the
bases, and Vandehey’s game-winning sin-
gle to left, scoring Jared Evans.
Seaside starter Scotty Plampin threw
a solid six innings, allowing 10 hits with
four strikeouts and two walks before giv-
ing way to Brent Walsh in the seventh.
The Gulls had six hits off two Banks’
pitchers, including two hits and three RBIs
by Duncan Thompson, with a double. Otto
Hoekstre added a double and drove in two
runs, and Dawson Blanchard also had two
RBIs for Seaside, while the Braves had a
home run by Gunnar Partain, and doubles
by Casey McGough, Trevor Thiessen and
Kylan Taylor.
