Trump pushback
Washington
state first
to file over
immigration

SEATTLE — Washing-
ton became the first state to
sue the Trump administra-
tion with a filing Monday
over the president’s execu-
tive order restricting refugees
and immigration. It won’t be
standing alone for long.
Since Donald Trump was
elected president, Demo-
cratic state attorneys general
have been forming a coordi-
nated wall of legal resistance
over immigration, environ-
mental protections, health
care, and other major issues.
“It’s my responsibility as
attorney general to defend
the rule of law, to uphold
the Constitution on behalf of
the people of this state. And
that’s what we’re doing,”
Washington Attorney Gen-
eral Bob Ferguson said.
New York Attorney Gen-
eral Eric Schneiderman told

neys general, are having an
“awakening” regarding the
Trump administration.
“This is a president who
does not have respect for
the rule of the law,” he said.
“That’s something that both-
ers a lot of people.”
Schneiderman
has
given model legislation to
local governments in New
York showing them how to
become sanctuary cities that
would refuse to cooperate
with federal authorities on
some immigration enforce-
ment matters.
The lawsuits were dis-
cussed as the fight over the
president’s executive order
on immigration escalated in
Washington, D.C.
Accusing her of betrayal
and insubordination, Trump
on Monday fired Sally Yates,
the acting attorney general
of the United States and a
Democratic appointee, after
she publicly questioned the
constitutionality of the refu-
gee and immigration ban and
refused to defend it in court.
The dramatic public
clash between the new pres-
ident and the nation’s top law
enforcement officer laid bare
the growing discord and dis-
sent surrounding Trump’s
executive order, which tem-
porarily halted the entire U.S.
refugee program and banned
all entries from seven Mus-
lim-majority nations for 90
days.
The firing came hours
after Yates directed Justice
Department attorneys not to
defend the executive order,
saying she was not convinced
it was lawful or consistent
with the agency’s obligation
“to stand for what is right.”
Trump accused Yates of hav-
ing “betrayed the Depart-
ment of Justice by refus-
ing to enforce a legal order
designed to protect the citi-
zens of the United States.”
He immediately named
longtime federal prosecu-
tor Dana Boente, the U.S.
Attorney for the Eastern Dis-
trict of Virginia, as Yates’
replacement.
Boente said Trump’s
executive order was “both
lawful on its face and prop-
erly drafted.”

Traffic was delayed on the Astoria Bridge early this morning after a logging truck
lost control of cargo.
The Daily Astorian
The Astoria Bridge temporarily closed
this morning after a truck spilled logs onto
U.S. Highway 101.
A reach on the truck broke about 1 mile
south of the Oregon-Washington border just
after 6 a.m., spilling the logs. No other vehi-
cles were involved in the accident and there
were no injuries.
Both lanes of traffic on the bridge opened
with flaggers after a few hours.
Candles caused Svensen house fire Four arrested in Seaside on meth charges
The Daily Astorian
Incense candles caused
the fire at a two-story home
on Svensen Market Road last
week, Knappa Fire District
Chief Paul Olheiser said.
The fire shut down
Svensen
Market
Road
between Simonsen Road and
Angberg Lane for roughly
five hours Tuesday morning.
Five fire engines and multiple
other agencies responded to
the scene. The damage from
the fire is close to $400,000,
Olheiser said.
Denise Allen, 62, was the
only occupant of the house
and escaped uninjured. She
was making breakfast just
after lighting incense candles
in her basement. While she
was cooking in the kitchen,
a carton of eggs caught fire.
Allen then escaped and called
911 at 6:26 a.m.
Olheiser said anyone
using candles or incense
should not leave them
unattended.
