Jim Sayce has studied the local landscape to pin-point the location of Dismal Nitch.
The National Park Service
commemorates this campsite at
the Dismal Nitch highway rest
area about a mile east of the As-
toria Bridge.
For nearly two decades, local
historian Jim Sayce has studied
the landscape to pinpoint the
exact location of Clark’s “Dis-
mal Nitch.” He uses the jour-
nal entries of Clark, along with
those of Sgt. John Ordway, Sgt.
Patrick Gass and Pvt. Joseph
Whitehouse along with histori-
cal maps, charts (including tidal
predictions) and photographs to
analyze their probable location
and movement.
