Verizon funds more robots for Warrenton High
By EDWARD STRATTON
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — Warren-
ton High School has received a
second surge of funding from
the Verizon Foundation for its
burgeoning robotics program.
The $8,600 it received
from Verizon will help expand
technology offerings to mid-
dle-school students, as well as
help Warrenton participate in
the Science Olympiad.
Presenting the award earli-
er this month were represen-
tatives from Verizon; faculty
and administration from War-
renton-Hammond School Dis-
trict; and U.S. Rep. Suzanne
Bonamici, D-Ore.
Warrenton originally re-
ceived a $11,152 grant from
Verizon in October. The mon-
ey helped pay for the startup
of a science, technology, en-
gineering and mathematics
class taught by instructor Josh
Jannusch, who also trained on
how to incorporate underwater
robots into teaching science
and math.
Since then, Jannusch’s
students have been building
renewable energy devices,
drones and underwater robots,
several of which recently com-
peted in a regional competition

Warrenton’s program received
a second grant because its
teacher and school administra-
tors like Principal Rod Heyen
have shown support, and be-
cause it has shown the ability
to grow.
In addition to its high school
technology and coding classes
and the new offerings that will
become available through the
Verizon grant, Warrenton has
used Lego Mindstorms to help
get kids interested in technol-
ogy. Heyen’s wife, technolo-
gy adviser Margaret Heyen,
runs a competitive First Lego
League team out of Warrenton
Grade School.
