    THE CREAMERY MAN'S NEW YEAR,
Man
Yirtaotu Kesolnlloni That Par tha
Who Mnkra Thorn.
At the beginning of a new year the
Mnsciention creamery man will stop to
take retrospect of the last year to see
where he has been derelict in his ways
f doing business, and where better and
more improved methods shonld and
conld be substituted.
To such the following list of resolves
will probably he a welcome help. It is
by no means an exhaustive one, bnt can
easily be extended where occasion re
quires: To do away with all haphazard and
hit or miss ways of bnying cream or
milk, buy only by the test, and thus re
duce this part of the business to a just
and equitable basis.
To provide a good supply of ice, or
rather an oversupply, so the butter
maker need not scrimp himself in the
nse of it next summer. Au oversupply
of ice won't cost as much now as an over
upply of summer heat will next summer.
To insist upon the use of ice by the
patron, and to encourage by every means
possible a more intelligent handling of
milk and cream.
To reject all milk and cream that is
nnfit for making first class butter.
To encourage the breeding of a higher
grade of dairy cattle and the intelligent
feeding and care of same by offering
premiums for the highest average month
ly tests.
To disseminate good dairy literature
among the patrons, and thus help ad
vance dairy knowledge umoug them.
To engage only such cream gatherers
as nave sutncient dairy knowledge to
act the in.-dructor to the patron where
necessary.
To insist uiHjn every employee taking
some dairy or creamery paper.
To urge the butter maker to join the
association.
To make only first class butter.
Calls Time on the Weather.
A subscriber enters the following vig
orous kick against the weather which is
not inappropriate. He savs: It seems
to me it is about time somebody ex
pressed his sentiment regarding the
weather. I think the Entkrpmsk sadly
remiss in its duty to go on week after
week and never even put in a protest,
to say nothing about a vigoious kick,
about the well, I havn't language to
express weather. Strangers in looking
over the paper see nothingeoneerning the
the weather at once infer that this is the
usual thing and not worth mentioning.
I tell you this rain and mud is giving
Oregon a black eye, and I am afraid
every body w ill pull up stakes and leave
the country.
Why even that great pHr the Ore-
gonian, is as mum as an ovster, only
publishing the weather man's report,
wtio says w e are still short over a foot of
the usual amount of rain. I think
Pague needs drowning if any man does.
Suppose tbe editors call a meeting or
convention, Invite Mr. Pairue to atrn,1

we let this go on much longer the

Against Jersey Inbreeding.
EurotaB was the result of an outcross.
Her owner generally Lred her and her
descendants together without iood r.
Bnlta in that way, but other people bred
her sons upon imported and other cows
that were no kin to her, and the result
of that course has been the large num
ber of tested granddaughtersof Eurotas.
I bought at public and private sales
several granddaughters of Eurotas, in
bred, and never could make a good cow
out of one of them, but 1 never, out of
eight of her granddaughters which were
ontcrossed, failed but in one instance ti
make a tested cow, although I h mght
them all as calves before they wi -e de
veloped. Tennessee people have been very buc
ceesful breeders of Jerseys, and they
have from the start adopted the simnl
plan of breeding the good individuals of
afferent approved families together and
never inbreeding closely. New Dairy.
Grape Flarored Butter.
Here is a new wrinklo for the dairy
man. It is said that a Chautauqua
fanner fed bis waste grapes to his cows
nd produced butter of an unusually
fine flavor.

A check for $10)0, signed by J. P.
Mann, the owner of Altao, is the price
Poftmaster Biers, ol Vancouver, re
ceived for his 10-months-old colt On-
cona. The colt is by Oneco out of Ven
eiia.anumucli is expected of it in the
future. The bargain was very quietly
maue ana the check handed over bv Mr
Mann with apparent satisfaction that his
bargain was a good one.
The State's stove Foundry.
The stale board Tuesday effected the
purchase of the stove foundry at the state
prison. The price paid was $40,000.
The purchase was consummated Hfi.r
considerable discussion and inquiry. It
was thought the officers would be able to
purchase for a less sum, but it could not
be done, and as they were anxious to
have the convicts employed, this was
thought the best move. With R. J.
Fleinming superintendent it is expected
the foundry will be started Monday.
