A steel girder bridgi, 01 fet 1 ng, between Durkeu and Weath- erby, Oregon, to replace a pile trestle. A steel girder bridge, 9r feet long, between Weathcrby and Huntington, to replace a Howe Truss bridge. A Htecl cirdcr bridge, 80 feet long, between Weatherby and Huntington, to replace a pile treble, A Htecl girder briuge, !)5 feet long, ne.ir Huntington, to replace a pdo treat In. Anted girder bridge, 20 feet long, near Huntington, to replace a pde trestle. A steel girder bridge, 65 feel long, between Kiparia and Hay, to replace a Howe Trim bridge. A steel girder bridge, 14 feet long, near Klberton, to replace a pile tiestlc. A steel liirder brideo, 11 feet long, near (iarlield. to replaca a frame treat Ic. Three steel bridge, each 80 feet long, near Tekoa, to replace Howe Truss bridge. A steel girder bridge, 80 feet long, near Koekford, Wash., to re pkee a Howe Trim bridge. The following culverts will be built, which will permit the frame trestles in those places to be filled in and a solid embankment sub stituted therefor. Eight-foot arch culvert, 90 feet long, near Fairview. Twelve-foot arch culvert, 101 feet long; sixteen-foot arch culvert 100 feet long; six-foot arch culvert. l'JO feet long and another of tl name size, 72 feet long, between Freeman and Chewier. The foregoing make a total of l!i steel bridges and 5 concrete maotiry arch culvert, all to be erected this year, tho contract for the concrete abutments and ma sonry for the culverts having al ready been let. An order was placed sometime ago with tl: American Bridge Co. for 1,501,000 pounds of steel for super-structure of somo of the bridee. This orde included three steel girders to 1 erected on concrete abutments which were put in last season on the changed line between Kc and Nolin. More important than ny of the above i the contract for what w be known as the "Kowena Change of Line." Seven mile of entirely new road bed on changed location will he built between Tunnel No. 3 and The Dalles. The reasons for this improvement are that the present road is quite crooked and will bo abandoned entirely, be tween the points given. The pres ent line has a maximum curvature of 10 degrees, while on the new Lne it will be but 4 degrees, The new line will be 1000 feet shorter than the old. a I, i. ' A party of U. 8. geological sur veyors are at work in the Cascade mountains in the vicinity of Odcll and Crescent lakes. They have ' found Odell lake - to be 4!)i)0 feet and Crescent lake 5025 feet above the level of the ocean. The sum mit of themoantains where they are crossed is 6850 feet above the level. The surveyors are now opening a trail to Waldo lake, tho " largest one of the group in that vi cinity, which will open a great finning and hunting country.
