JUNE 23, 2017, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A11 OPENER, continued from Page 10 Pino intentionally walled Aragon, and Josh Magee’s double to right drove in Bean and White with Aragon reaching third. John Timmins relieved Pino, and Lopez singled to right, scoring Aragon. Kelvin Melean hit into a force out that let Magee score. Another force out ended the top of the eighth with Tri-City ahead 7-3. With John Zimmerman taking the mound for the Dust Devils in the Volcano eighth, Kirby walked and went to second on Medrano’s single to left. Geraldo drove Kirby home with a single to center and reached second on a throw by center fi elder Carter. Zimmerman retired the next three batters. Asuncion led off the Tri- City ninth with a double to right and went to third on a wild pitch. Carter struck out, and Bean scored Asuncion with a single to right. White singled to left, moving Bean to second. Aragon fl ew out to right, and Magee tripled to right, driving Bean and White home. A new pitcher, Evan Miller, retired the Volcanoes in order in the bottom of the ninth. Smith was the winning pitcher, and Pino took the loss. After praising Woods’ pitching, Volcano manager Jolbert Cabrera said factors in the loss were that the Dust Devils “just found holes” in Salem-Keizer’s game, includ- ing a hanging slider that al- lowed Asuncion’s homer. “A few guys took too many bases,” he said. Woods, asked whether his several pitches included an “out” pitch, said it depended on the batter. He added that Mainwaring did a good job calling pitches. Geraldo said through a translator that the Volcanoes generally needed to keep working at things to start winning. A crowd of 1,542, very small for a season opener, came to the stadium on a day when rain fell harder in some parts of the Salem-Keizer area than others. Friday, June 16: Volcanoes 8, Tri-City 6 Salem-Keizer took the lead in a four-run sixth inning and kept it, reaching a .500 record for the infant season. Malique Ziegler got three hits, including a home run, for the Volcanoes. Teammate Byron Murray also homered, as did the Dust Devils’ Tre Carter. The Volcanoes outhit their hosts 13-6 but made all three of the errors of the game. Jose Marta was Salem-Keiz- er’s starting pitcher. Hengerber Medina, the second of three relievers, got the win, and Em- manuel Clase, also a reliever, was the losing pitcher. Cesar Yanez had a save. Saturday, June 17: Tri-City 9, Volcanoes 4 The Dust Devils dominated this game, scoring a run in the fi rst inning and two each in the by a run. Kevin Rivera tripled and scored on a single by Juan Rodriguez. In the Salem-Keizer sixth, Christoph Bono singled, went to second on a balk call, and stole third base. Tri-City man- ager Ben Fritz and pitching coach Josh Spence were ejected for arguing too heatedly. Rich- ard Amion singled Bono home, but the Dust Devils answered with the fi nal run of the game in the eighth. Luis Asuncion walked, stole second, reached third on an error, and scored as Kevin Melean singled. Dauris Valdez was the win- ning pitcher and John Timmins the loser, both in relief. Austin Smith got a save. The attendance of 2,328 was the best so far for a Volca- noes home game. Monday, June 19: Tri-City 7, Volcanoes 4 The Volcanoes blew another lead, largely by allowing 11 walks to the Dust Devils. Salem-Keizer had its mo- ments, including fi ve shutout innings and eight strikeouts by starter Alejandro de la Rosa and four stolen bases by Manu- el Geraldo, but Cesar Yanez had an uncharacteristic relief ap- pearance, walking fi ve and al- lowing three runs in his 1-2/3 innings. second and fi fth before the Vol- canoes got their fi rst run in the sixth. Sidney Duprey, Salem-Keiz- er’s starting and losing pitcher, gave up fi ve runs, four earned, in his six innings, as well as eight hits and three walks, striking out one. Jose Galindo was the winning pitcher in re- lief. Tri-City outhit the Volca- noes 13-9, with Luis Asuncion getting three hits and three of his teammates two each. The visitors also scored two runs each in the seventh and eighth. Malique Ziegler, Robinson Medrano, and Mikey Edie had two hits apiece in the losing cause. Sunday, June 18: Tri-City 4, Volcanoes 3 This one went back and forth, with each side scoring the same number of earned runs (three). Everyone in the Dust Dev- ils’ lineup had at least one hit for a total of 11. Salem-Keizer had nine hits but made the only two errors of the game. Volcano starter Julio Benitez allowed only one run, which was earned, in his fi ve innings, and had six strikeouts. The game was tied 1-1 go- ing into the bottom of the fi fth, when the Volcanoes went up The Volcanoes led 2-1 after six innings, but the Dust Dev- ils scored two runs each in the seventh, eighth, and ninth. Tri- City outhit Salem-Keizer only 8-7 but allowed only two walks to 11 for the hosts. Andres Munoz was the winning pitcher in relief, with Evan Miller recording a save. Yanez took the loss. Tuesday, June 20: Hillsboro 7, Volcanoes 6 (12 innings) It took the fi rst extra-inning Salem-Keizer game of the sea- son to do it, but the Volcanoes failed again to hold a lead. In the fi rst of a three-game road series, the Volcanoes scored two runs each in the fi rst, third, and fourth innings, but the Hops scored twice in the fourth and tied the score in the sixth. There was a home run on each side, by Salem-Keizer’s Malique Ziegler in the fi rst with the bases empty and one by Hillsboro’s Kyle Smith with a man on in the fourth. Volcano starter Alex Bos- tic pitched well despite some control trouble that got him replaced early in the fi fth. John Timmins was the losing pitch- er and Cody Clark the winner, striking out six in his three in- nings.
