We got better as a team. Overall, defense was much better than it’s been and our serving has improved dra- matically.” MHS started out by go- ing 4-2 in pool play and then dominated Benson 2-0 (25- 5, 25-6) in the fi rst round of the bracket. The Lady Celts topped South Albany 2-1 (25- 16, 22-25, 15-3) in the semi- fi nals. “We got on a roll,” My- ers said. “Everything was fall- ing right in place. They made a couple of mistakes and we capitalized. We stayed assertive. We didn’t back off and kept pressuring them.” McNary defeated Tigard 2-0 (25-21, 25-15) in the championship game. “They’re (Tigard) a solid team,” Myers said. “They didn’t have any one solid player but were somewhat balanced. We were just consis- tent all day. If we stay focused on our side of the net, good things are going to happen.” In Greater Valley Confer- ence play, the Lady Celts de- feated North Salem 3-1 (25- 16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-8) on Tuesday, Oct. 4. McNary shuts out Vikings By HERB SWETT Of the Keizertimes McNary whipped Forest Grove 24-0 at home Friday, Sept. 30, improving to 3-2 and leaving the Vikings winless. Josiah Gilbert was the Celt- ics’ star, scoring two rush- ing touchdowns, throwing a touchdown, and intercepting a pass. AJ Johnk kicked a 21- yard fi eld goal and three extra points. Johnk’s squib kickoff started the game, and the Celtic de- fense kept Forest Grove from getting anywhere with the ball. A punt from Cole Ham- mond went out of bounds at the Viking 44-yard line, and a run by Brendan Van Voorhis got McNary to the 35. Forest Grove held the Celtics to no gain on the next two plays, but on fourth down quarterback Josiah Gilbert ran to the right all the way into the end zone. Johnk’s kick gave the Celtics a 7-0 lead with 8:44 left in the fi rst quarter. Soon after the second quarter started, Lucas Garvey intercepted a Forest Grove pass at the McNary 15. A few plays later, the Vi- kings got the ball back on a fumble and had fi rst down and goal to go at the Celtic 8. Tackles by Kolby Barker and Gilbert held the visitors, and McNary had the ball back at its 11-yard line. Again the Celtic offense faltered, with a pass from Ty- ler Ellertson being picked off by Chino Davis at the For- KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. This time, the Celts got some- where. After a pass from Gil- bert to Van Voorhis put the ball on the Forest Grove 20 and two short gains got the ball to the 3, Gilbert ran up the middle for McNary’s second touchdown. Johnk kicked for a 14-0 Celtic lead. McNary got the ball back quickly, with Gilbert inter- cepting a pass and taking the ball to the Forest Grove 4. The Celtics soon found themselves with fourth and goal at the 4, and Johnk kicked his fi eld goal in the closing seconds of the Whiteaker Middle School’s varsity football team stayed unbeaten with an exciting 34- 28 win at Straub on Thursday, Sept. 29. After several big plays for both teams, Whiteaker scored with just seconds left in the second quarter to send the game into halftime tied at 20. After some key defensive adjustments and led by its undersized offensive line, the Wolverines came out strong in the second half and built a 34-20 lead. Straub had a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter when it was driving and down just one score, but White- aker linebacker Rian Canini caused a fumble that was re- covered by cornerback Quen- tin Camenisch. WMS capitalized on the turnover when on the ensuing drive Martin punched it in from one yard out to give the Wolverines the 14 point lead that held until Straub scored a touchdown with just four sec- onds left in the game to pro- vide the fi nal margin. Whiteaker rushed for 242 yards, led by Martin’s four touchdowns. Head Coach Tom Lar- imer praised Martin’s effort and toughness, saying “Ian has been sore all week since cramping up last week, and we weren’t even sure until warmups he could even play. This was an example of a kid giving every ounce of effort he possibly can—and then some—when his team needed him most.” Please see WMS, Page 11 Powder Puff Please see MCNARY, Page 11 Boys soccer team tops West Albany, Sprague By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary’s boys soccer team got its fi rst Greater Valley Conference win of the season, knocking off West Albany 3-1 on Thursday, Sept. 29. Switching formations and playing an additional forward, the Celtics scored all three of their goals in the second half. “It gave us more power up front and that paid off,” Mc- Nary coach Miguel Camarena said. “The important thing for us is to create opportunities, which has been done. We’re practicing daily the fi nishing part and that paid off the last game.” The Celtics scored their fi rst two goals off corner kicks. Jesus Lopez headed in a Bryan Keo corner in the 45th min- ute. Gustavo Villalvazo then nearly headed in another cor- ner kick just six minutes later but a West Albany defender was able to save it on the line. However, Javier Zepeda was there to fi nish. McNary extended its lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute when Zepeda passed to Luis Lopez, who then found the bottom corner of the goal. The Bulldogs scored their only goal with about fi ve minutes left to play. The Celtics then defeated Sprague 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Zepeda scored two goals and Jack Baez had the third.
