HOWALD Of the Keizertimes A pair of McNary High School graduates visited their alma mater last week in hope of inspiring the next genera- tion of Celtic innovators. Amber Rushton, a Nike global brand communica- tion manager, and Matt Wat- son, owner of Portland-based design fi rm Watson Creative, took time to talk with stu- dents at McNary Oct. 14. The school gathered at an assembly that included feature presenta- tions from the two speakers and a Q&A session after they were done. Rushton said her largest lesson as a student came as a freshman the McNary, taking honors physical science. “I went to all the classes took notes, made fl ashcards and went in after school ev- ery day to ask lots of ques- tions. What I realized was that I needed to learn how I learned,” she said. She said she returns to that lesson over and over again, most recently when she moved from Nike’s digital branding to global branding where she participated in making her fi rst commercial for the company. “I needed to think about my learning process and learn how to ask questions,” she said. Watson has also done branding and design work for Nike, but said his career had its roots in activities he took part in as a Celtic. “My entire life, I always drew. Drew house plans and logos and anything else I could think of,” Watson said. “When I was a student, my best courses were math and physics, but I drew a T-shirt for the football team and took art classes to hone my craft,” Watson said. Disaster King and queen for a day prep meeting Nov. 4 Senator Kim Thatcher (SD-13) will join Represen- tatives Bill Post (HD-25) and John Davis (HD-26) along with state and local offi cials for a town hall series about di- saster preparedness in Oregon. The tour of cities stops in Keizer Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Keizer Fire Station, 661 Chemawa Road N.E. Emergency management experts will be presenting on the ways Oregon is preparing for the possibility of a high magnitude earthquake in the Pacifi c Northwest. All citizens and public offi cials are invited to attend. Holiday bazaar slated Nov. 6 KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald McNary alum Amber Rushton talks with students about her experiences as a student and a Nike employee. His interest in art even- tually landed him a graphic design degree from Oregon State University, and in the offi ces of prestigious former employers including Ogilvee & Mather, MTV and Lip- pincott. It was while work- ing with Lippincott that he learned just how powerful de- sign could be. “I got to design the logo for an old airline and it was the coolest thing to see my design land on the tarmac,” Watson said. The current list of clients at Watson Creative includes names like the San Francisco 49ers, Oregon Food Bank, Burgerville and the group re- cently helped put together a children’s book, The Cultured Chef. Both alums encouraged students to not only think about what they want to do, but to actually go out and give it a try. “The hardest part is decid- ing where you want to go, but that comes from getting involved in a lot of activities and immersing ourselves in experiences that tell us about ourselves,” Rushton said. The Salem Hospital Auxilia- ry will kick off the 2015 holiday season with a holiday craft ba- zaar on Friday, Nov. 6, in Build- ing D on the Salem Hospital campus.
