It shall be unlawful to sell, barter,
trade a-ive or in any manner furnish

years, any tobacco, cigars, cigarettes,
in anv form, or any compouna in
which tobacco forms a component
part, without the written consent or
order of such minors parent or
guardian, and when such minor has
no parent or guardian, then in that
case consent may be given by the
County Court, sitting for the trans
action of county business, upon pro
per application in the county in
which said minor may have his res
idence. Any person violating the
provisions of this act shall upon con
viction, be fined in any sum not
less than $5.00 nor more than $50.00,
And under Sec. Z149 Laws oi Ore
gon: Unlawful for minor to smoke in
Public, It shall be unlawful for any
minor under the age of eighteen
years to smoke or in any way use
any cigar, cigarette, or tobacco in
any form whatsoever in any public
highway, street, place, square, or
resort. Any minor violating the
provisions of this act shall, upon
conviction, be fined in any sum not
less than $1.00 nor more than $10.00
or by imprisonment at the option
of the court, two days for each of
fence. Justice of the peace shnll
have concurrent jurisdiction with
the circuit court for all offenses
arising undec this act.
And whereas it has come to the
attention of the members of the
Parent-Teacher Association, that boys
in all grades of our school under
'eighteen years of age, in open viola
tion of this law are either smoking
cigarettes or using tobacco, in some
form; and whereas, in the interestF
of the school, the city, and of good
government, and for the best inter
ests of the youth, it is essential

Sunday School Convention Elects Of

ONTARIO. April 15. At the Sun
day School convention held here on
Tuesday and Wednesday, the follow
ing officers for the coming year were
elected: President, Hugh Allen, On
tario: Vice President, Mrs. R. D.
Lytle, Vale; Secretary-Treasurer,
Mrs. R. J. Davis. Nyssa. Many in
teresting addresses were on the pro
gram and on Wednesday afternoon
questions dealing with Sunday School
efficiency were discussed, Mr. Hum
bert and Mr. Keeler conducting the
discussion. In the evening special
music by the high school was en
joyed.
E. L. Shetler was arraigned for
larceny before Judge King's court
Monday, but waived examination and
was bound over to the grand jury
after furnishing a cash bond of $3,-
500. In September, 1919, Shetler is
illoged to have stolen and carried
away from the Boyer well in Ontar
io, from the Inter-Mountain Uil uo.,
and from the Western Pacific Oil &
Gac Co, holdings at Vale, engine
fixtures valued between $6,000 to
$7,000. He was was located at Twin
Falls and was escorted back to On
tario Monday by Deputy Sheriff
Glenn. He refused to come without
representative, secured a lawyer
and was released under writ of
Habaes Corpus.
Mrs. K. B. Hill, of Demo, stopped
in Ontario for a few days while on
her way to Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. K. H. BuercK were
in from Burns the first of the week.
Mr. and Mrs. A. E. .Nichols of Iron
side are visiting in the city.
Ground was broken Wednesday on
Main street and the three blocks
south of the Pharmacy 'are being
plowed and put into shape for the
paving.
A number of Ontario's business
men tried fishing in Snake river last
Sunday but reported that angling
was to no avail.
Bishop Paddock and Rev. Dr. Van
Waters were in Ontario the early
part of the week and held a business
neeting of the Episcopal church Wed
nesday evening.
Ontario's ball team played a pre
liminary practice game Sunday with
Fruitland and won its first honors by
r score of nine to four.
Work is progressing rapidly on
the new residence which Charles
Atherton is building north of the
house he recently sold to Mr. A. L.
Sproule.
The Ca.sh Variety store changed
its location this week to the build
ing just north of the American Ex
press office. . '
H. H. Tenny, Frank Ryan, P. J.
Gallagher and George Reihson at
tended the K. C. initiation at Boise
Sunday.
Miss Gibson and Miss Crystal West
of Nyssa were here for the Oregon
Club dunce Friday.

from Riverside this week.

Construction is well under way on
the Ontario Milling company's plant

Works. The former is expected to be
ready about June 1st and the latter

Residents are signing up this week
for the city to turn the water into
open ditches about town. Since it
is necessary to know the number of
lots to be irrigated before the cost
can be computed, the property own
ers are urged to sign up at once.
Miss Estelle Conway left Saturday
evening for Portland to attend the
marriuge of her brother. James D.
Conway, to Miss Rita Manning.
Mrs. C. R. Emison was hostess at

Club Saturday afternoon.
Theodore Deck was seriously in
jured Thursday afternoon in a ball
game between the Ontario and Fruit
land eighth grades, when he collided
with one of the other players, break
ing his right leg above the knee.
He is reported as doing nicely at
present.
The High School base ball team
played its first game of the season
when it met Weiser Friday after
noon. The score was nine to one in
favor of Weiser.
