IN 2000 counties in the United States the pastors
and laymen of 30 great denominations will meet
in conference this month.
It is the kind of conference that generals hold
before a critical engagement; that business men
hold before entering a new market. A conference
of judgment, not emotion; a clear-eyed facing of
the facts.
A Survey that Business Men Must Admire
For more than a year hundreds of workers have been
quietly engaged in making a scientific survey of the mission
fields, and of America county by county.
The facts developed are startling. No such picture of
America's religious situation has ever before been drawn.
On the basis of these surveys thirty Protestant de
nominations are uniting in a
Nation Wide Cooperative Campaign
Each of the thirty denominations has its own "For
ward Movement" organized and officered. The Interchurch
World Movement is the clearing house for all of these.
It is the agency which the churches have created to
avoid duplication, to foster cooperation and make sure that
very man and dollar render the utmost service possible.
The month of April will be devoted to 'making
the facts of the survey known to America; in the week of
April 25th -May 2nd, will come a united simultaneous
financial campaign.

The business section of Eugene Is be
ing canvassed In favor of a movement
to close all stores at 6 o'clock In the

Bankers representing Lane, Coos,
Curry and Douglas counties met at
iioseburg Saturday In regular group

The Presbyterian church of Iioseburg
has raised the pastor's salary to 11800
a year and reduced the church debt
from $7000 to $2000.
The 85th annual Benton county Sun
day school convention was held at the
First Congregational church In Cor
vallis Saturday afternoon.
The navy department at the request
of Senator Chamberlain will probably
drtail a battleship to Astoria for the
Grand Army encampment.
Few contracts are being made In
Marlon county for. loganberries at 12
cents per pound. Producers are hold
ing out for 14 and 19 cents.
Fire losses In Oregon for the month
of March, exclusive of Portland to
taled $57,000, according to a report
by A. C. Barber, state fire marshal.
Captain Cushman Hartwell, now
with the Eleventh cavalry at Monterey,
Cat., is detailed as assistant military

been elected presiding elder of the Ore- j
gon conference of that denomination
for a term of four years.
Oregon postmasters soon to be ap
pointed are: Mary L. Folger, Buell,
Polk county; Charles J. Bush, Harper,
Malheur county, and Clement E. Gough
at Mehama, Marion county.
Under the name of the Klamath
County Chamber of Commerce, the old
Klamath Commercial club, which
lapsed into Inactivity at the beginning
of the war, has been reorganized.
Mrs. E. A. Young of Tangent was
elected president of the Oregon Pres
byterian Missionary society of the
United Presbyterian church of Oregon
in the annual convention at Albany.
John H. Seavey, pioneer hop grower
of Lane county, has contracted with a
Portland firm to sell his 1920 crop of
hops at 70 cents a pound, which is
said to be the highest price ever quot
ed in the county.
Ground will be broken May 1 for
tha new Catholic academy at Klamath
Falls, which it is planned to make
eventually one of the largest Catholic
schools In the state. The building will
be a three-story brick structure.
H. A. Endrup of Hllgard killed him
self In the Hotel Sommer at Elgin be
cause of disgrace in being arrested on
the charge of burning his hotel build
ing at Hllgard several weeks ago in
order to collect $1800 insurance.
W. B. Parker, Klamath Falls manag
er of the Klamath Development com
pany, backed by San Francisco and
Spokane capitalists, has purchased the
Keno Power company, including the
Klamath river power plant. The price
was $80,000.
Five suits have been filed In the cir
cuit court by the state industrial ac
cident commission against Clatsop
count)' firms, and individuals to re
cover the amounts alleged to be due
the state five fees for the state acci
dent Insurance.
At a meeting of the board of direc
tors of the Oregon Pioneer assocla
'Ion recently held prellmlna- plans
for the 48th annual, reunion were out
lined. The reunion will take place
on Thursday, July 1, in the public
auditorium in Portland.
Contracts were expected to be sign
ed at the shipping board Monday
whereby the construction of seven 12,
odd ton tankers wit be awarded to the
Northwest Steel company of Portland,

Accountants employed by the state
to conduct au audit of the books and

Members of the Oregon Jersey
Breeders' association will hold a three
days' Jubilee In the Willamette valley
beginning May 3. The purpose of the
tour of the valley Is to ascertain at
first hand what Is being accoiupllahed
along the line of Improving the "Jer
sey herds.
The Astoria Amateur Wireless as
sociation, with E. P. Hawkins, presi
dent; Carl JosephBon, vice-president;
E. A. Smith, secretary and treasurer
and a charter membership of 15, was
reorganized April 1. . The former or
ganization was discontinued at the
outbreak of the war.
The Oregon State Bar association,
through Us grievance committee, has
filed proceedings In the supreme court
asking that George A. Halt, an at
torney of Portland, and John N. Solv
ers, an attorney with offices at Oregon
City, be disbarred from practicing
their profession in Oregon.
Pine Valley residents are making
another effort to divide Baker county.
It is proposed to cut off what is called
the Panhandle, once a part of Union
county but later annexed to Baker,
and form a new county. The great
distance from the Panhandle to Baker,
the county seat, is the source of dis
satisfaction. Reports from the Long Creek and
Muddy Creek districts in Baker coun
ty are to the effect that a second
winter is being experienced, and bay
Is becoming so scarce that there is
likely to be a severe loss of stock if
the winter lasts much longer. Be
cause of the snow, all farm work has
been discontinued.
Practically all the laws passed at the
special session of the legislature last
January, with the exception of those ve
toed by Governor Olcott and others con
tingent upon approval of the voters at
the election to be held on May 21, will
become operative April 17, according to
announcement made by Sara A. Kozer,
assistant secretary of state.
