The Harnev County Wool Growers association, recently organized, has turned down a flattering offer made by the Bend Automobile Trucks company to transport their wool to Bend and has selected Vale and Ontario as the best place to market their wool. This means that practically all of the Harney county and Steins mountain wool will come this way this season. Sheep shearing along the eastern border of this county has already be gun at the Trow and Johnson plant on the Belding ranch between Vale and i Ontario. About 7000 sheep will be i sheared there this season. I At the Anderson-Gwinn ranch, six miles east of Vale, where lambing season is well advanced the 7000 ewes show an increase of 141 per cent. When the large Brogan shearing plant starts operations about the mid dle of next month several thousand sheep will be sheared each day during the season. The run estimated will total about 100,000 head of sheep. MINING PROPERTIES OF MALHEUR COUNTY MAKE GOOD SHOWING Pioneer Mining Man Visits Vale-Tells of Activity in the Mormon Basin Sees Wonderful Change in the County Seat Let the Enterprise do it! GREA T RE VIVAL IS SEEN IN MALHEUR COUNTY REAL EST A TE The mill run at the Humboldt mine, a few days ago, proved very Futis factory according to S. P. Colt, the pioneer mining man of the Mormon Basin who was in town Monday. "It showed up $12 to the ton and the best was sorted and shipped to the smelter. This mine, said he is looking better than ever before and will show up good." There is lots of snow in the Basin, three and a half feet, while the moun tains are covered by a seven foot blanket. There should be lots of water for mining this season." According to Mr. Colt, 75 men developing the Rainbow and a new mill will be erected in the spring to take the place of the old one now be ing torn down. There is also great activity in the outside camps, and the Colt Brothers prospected all win ter on their eight properties in the Basin. Of interest to the people of the Willow River valley is the statement of Mr. Colt to the effect that there was more snow in the upper Willow Creek territory than ever known Whenever the chinook hits the deep snow there should be abundance of water to fill the big reservoirs of the Willow River irrigation project. Mr. Colt had not been in Vale for two years, having on his last trip driv en down from the Basin, as the Bro gan line was not yet completed. The progress of the county Beat dur ing that time was pleasing to him. The many new business buildings, the are ! passenger and freight depots, the new shool house, the natatorium, the ce ment walks, the many new residences all looked good to him. He was also pleased to see the railroad construction camps north of the depot, and to hear of the railroad work west of town. Everywhere he saw progress and a busy town. fords a correspondingly larger feed ing space for the roots of growing plants. The frequent cultivation recommended for the purpose of con serving moisture tends to destroy weeds which do more toward produc ing droughty conditions than is gen erally realized. J. H.. When in his system of rotation the farmer is ready to plow up alfalfa he has another inestimable contribu lion to the land's fertility in the stubble and roots. It is not recom mended to plow under any consider able growth as a green manure, as the hay crop is too valuable. Its market value would buy more fertil izers than the same growth is worth for humus. After a field has stood for five or six years, the roots have added largely to the humus content. Prof W. P. Headden of Colorado ed that the fertilizing value of the stubble and 61 inches of roots plowed under is about $20 per acre, while the value of the stubble and entire root system is not less than $35per acre. HOW TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR CHICKENS Why many poultry houses fail to meet the requirements for protection to egg producers, and the main point which should be observed in building hen houses, are told by Prof. James Dryden in one of his circular bullet ins. "The purpose of housing fowls is to increase productiveness," says Prof. Dryden,." A little shelter from the cold winds and storms will add to the comfort of the fowls and therefore to the egg yield, and the reason is probably because the change means a sudden demand for increased fuel or food to keep up the heat of the body, and the food that has been going ltito the making of eggs will be drawn upon for that purpose.
