On October 8th, tho party arrivod at tho post oroctod by Mr. Honry of tho Missouri Fur company. The post was nbandonod at this tlmo and tho party took possession and pro ceeded to build boats on which to float down tho rlvor. At this placo Robinson, Hoback, Riznor and Mr. Mllor, ono of tho partners, stayed to hunt and trap for boavor and other amlmals. Tho party ombarkod on tho rlvor October 18, 1811. On October list, what Is now American Falls, was reached. It was necessary to lower tho boats around the falls by means of ropes. On October 28th, tho party ar rived at a point near the prosont alto of Twin Falls. Hero tho party mot wth many reverses and ondurod many hardships. One of tbo boats was wrecked and ono of the boat- mon, Antolne Clapplno was drowned. This place lir tho river was called Caldron Lnn. Tho situation of tho travellers was indeed gloomy as a survey of tbo rlvor sho,wod that it was Imposslblo to navigate It and the banks of tbo river wero so high and stoop that it was difficult to secure water for drinking purposes. There was no game In the country and tbo company began to suffer from hunger. Tho party divided Into several groups to try and dlscovor t"he best way out of tho dilemma. McLennan and tbreo men kept on down the river, Crooks and five men started back up the rlvor to secure horses left at Fort Henry, McKonzlen and four men started across tbe dosert and Mr. Hunt and thirty-one men besides the squaw and two children of Pierro Dorlon stayed in camp. In three days Crook and his party re turned, deeming it imposslblo to secure tho horses and get bogk to the party before winter. Tho main party then kept on down tho river, subsisting on fish and an occasion al beaver. The party then divided, Mr. Hunt and eighteen men going on ono sldo of -the river and Mr. Crooks and eighteen men on the other side. countorcd from whom somo salmon and a dog woro purchased. Mr. Hunt and his party continued on down tho rlvor caujmn which was very stoop and difficult to nogo- tlato. Food was vory scarce, tho party subsisting on a black-tall door, a boavor and somo froxou borrlos, Tho .horsos woro killed und oaten ono by ono until only that owned by Pierro Dorlon romalued. On Docombor Oth, 1811, Mr. Crooks and his party woro soon on tho othor sldo of tho rlvor, return ing aftor a vain attempt to got through tho narrow proclpltlous Lcanyou of tho river aud seolng noth ing but mountains piled upon moun tals for mllos ahead. Crooks and his men woro almost starved, having subslstod on a few boavor and old moccasins. Huut and bis mon then turnod about and startod back up tbo rlvor. In their extremity Mr. Hunt sug gested that the horso of Pierro Dor lon bo killed and eaten, but tbe ownor doggedly refusod to part with bis animal. Continuing on ,tbo party coino unexpectedly upon a camp of Shoshono Indians who fled In great fright when tho whlto mon camo in sight. Proceeding along tho river banks tbe party met with some Shoshone Indians and tho lure ot an old tin kettlo secured another horse for food, Mr, Hunt now camo to tho Welsor river whero a band of Shoshonos were camped. From tbem ho traded for a couple of horsos, a dog and somo dried cherries. After consider able bickering ho procured an In dian guide to load them over tbo mountains to the Columbia.
