On line condolences may be shared at www. tamispinevalleyfuneralhome.com. — Obituaries — Frances Eileen Shurtleff Prairie City, 1926-2015 Frances Eileen Shurtleff, 88, of Prairie City died on January 29, 2015 while at Blue Mountain Care Center Frances in Prairie City, Oregon. Shurtleff A graveside will be held for Frances at a later time. Frances was born to Fay- ette Millard Bach and Edna Maude (Boyer) Bach in Mountain Home, Idaho on August 21, 1926. She was the third of six children. Her father worked for the railroad so the family moved often. She went to school in the Moun- tain Home and Mullen, Idaho areas. The year before Pearl Harbor was bombed, she lived with her oldest sister Catherine and Catherine’s family in Hawaii. In 1943 the Bach family moved to Haines, Oregon. Fran was part of the last graduating class at Haines School. Fran went on to attend college in La Grande to become a LPN. She married Leslie Perkins and had two daughters, Linda and Toby. She later married Donald Brown and had three sons, Kelly, Wade and Brock. Fran met and married Lonnie D. Shurtleff who already had one son, Lon- nie Lee Shurtleff. She and Lonnie had a son, John D. Shurtleff. Lonnie and Fran lived at Rock Creek and raised cattle until Lonnie’s death. Fran was a great cook and many family dinners were enjoyed over the years. Fran made quilts, loved to play cards, shoot pool, go fishing and loved all the grandchildren. Through- out all those years Fran worked outside her home for the Democrat Herald Newspaper, H & R Block and Senior and Disabled Services in Baker City. After Lonnie died, Fran sold the ranch and moved to North Powder to be close to her youngest son, John. Because of fail- ing health Fran moved to Baker City and lived at Idlewood Manor and St. Alphonsus Care Center. When St. Alphonsus care center closed, Fran went to Blue Mountain Care Center in Prairie City. Survivors are Lonnie and wife Pat Shurtleff of LaGrande, OR, Linda and husband Dennis Butenhoff of Barnesville, MN, Toby and husband Tom Hacker of Haines, OR, Kelly and wife Georgia Brown of Baker City, Brock Shurtleff of St. Joseph, MO, John and wife Angela Shurtleff of Haines, OR, and sisters Edna and husband Alvin Gawith of Baker City and Carol and husband Andy Anderson of Guide Rock, NE, numerous grandchil- dren and great- grandchil- dren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Leslie, Donald, and Lonnie, brothers William Bach, Gene Bach and sister Catherine Hoopii, son Wade Brown, grandson Darrel Hacker and great grand daughter, Berlyn Anderson. Alva Justus Baker City, 1923-2015 Alva Edi- son Justus, 91, of Baker City, died February 3, 2015. Services cel- ebrating his Alva Justus life was held Saturday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel with Pastor Dave Deputy of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Alva was born October 6, 1923 in Rye Valley and remained an Oregonian his whole life. He was raised on a farm with five sisters and two brothers who rode “Old Red,” the horse, to school together. He graduated from high school in 1942 in Vale. He was an athlete, par- ticipating in high school sports, football, basketball, and was on the boxing team. After graduation, he worked side by side with his father, Tona, on their farm until he left to serve his country in World War II. This duty took him to South Korea on occupational duty where he gained experience and knowledge to operate heavy equipment with the 13th Engineer Battalion. He was honorably dis- charged from the Army in May 1947. Alva used his G.I. bill benefits to get his pilot s license at a small airfield in Harper, flying a Cessna 140. He enjoyed flying himself and his friends around Eastern Oregon, Idaho and Washington... but after he married his sweetheart, Norma, he never flew again Alva met and married the love of his life, Norma Jackson all in the same year. They were married in Vale on August 10, 1951. Alva and Norma were married 63 years, and had four daughters. He moved his family to Baker City in 1970, and retired here at the age of 62. He en- joyed hunting and fishing on the Snake River. Alva’s career usually always involved heavy equipment operation and provided an opportunity to raise his four daughters on a farm, together with all the farm animals and adventures. Alva was simply a kind gentleman with a big heart. He worked hard, loved strong, and lived long. He served his country, pro- vided for his family, was loyal, humble, selfless, and a fighter until his last breath. Survivors include his wife, Norma L. Justus, one sibling, Erma John- son, four daughters: Lynn Miller and Bruce of Vancouver, WA, Toni Goss and Milo of Baker City, Jeannie Olson and Roger of Bend, OR, Jill Walker and John of Moses Lake, WA; grandchildren: Shane Gutridge, Kristi Miller DeVoe, Lee Miller, Bobby Lemmon, Joshua Walker, Jared Olson, Cody Meiser; and 10 great-grandchil- dren. Sam Campo Union, 1932-2015 Sam Campo, 82, of Union, OR died at Ange- line Senior Living Center in La Grande on January 30, 2015. A memorial service was held at Echos of Praise Church, 1520 X Avenue, La Grande Sat- urday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Zan Coen officiating Samuel Newell Campo was born May 7, 1932 in Albion, Michigan to James Vincenzo and Mildred Hubbard Campo. He was raised in Michigan and started driving truck at the age of 16. He drove truck through- out 48 states and lived in Kansas, California, Ne- vada, Utah and Washington before moving to Portland, OR. He drove truck for 33 years until a bad accident forced him into disability. While in Portland, Sam met Mary Ann Schleich- ardt and they were married Jan. 4, 1992 in Clackamas, OR. They moved from Or- egon to Michigan and back before moving to Union, OR in 2008. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, son Roger Campo, brother James Campo and a sister Roselia Meteyer Sam is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Union, OR, sons: Samuel P. Marion “Bruce” Christman Baker City, 1943-2015 Marion “Bruce” Christman, 71, of Baker City died February 1, Bruce 2015. A Christman Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, February 20th at the North Powder Fire Department at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jesse Whitford of the Baker City Christian Church officiating. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the North Powder Elemen- tary School following the service.
