FIRE AT FALLS
CltY
Monday night the Falls City
Mill owned by the Falls City
Lumber Company, located about
a mile and a half above Falls
City was completely destroyed
by fire entailing a loss of about
$35,000. This plant was on of
the largest in this section and
was an extensive shipper of lum
ber. It is not known to us
whether the plant will be rebuilt
at once or what insurance was
carried by the company.
SCHOOL SUP'T
EXHIBITS
In order that all children may
understand more about the condi
tions for making exhibits at the
county State Fair, Supt. Seymour
will veet the children of the
county at the following school
houses on the dates and hours
mentioned.
Every child who makes an ex
hibit will receive a ticket admit
ting him or her to the fair for
any one day of the fair.
It costs nothing to make the
exhibit, transportation will be
free by the R. R. and Supt. Sey
mour will be present to look
after the exhibits of the child
ren from Polk county.
Many of the prizes are very
valuable and Well worth winning;
it is well worth the effort of ev
ery child to make an exhibit at
the State Fair, Polk county is
the banner school county and
now is the time for every child,
parent and person interested in
in the schools of the county to
help in this Fair and see that
Polk County is well represented.

will meet the children and give
them whatever instructions they
may wish, all children planning
to make exhibits should meet
him if possible;-

Marvin Richardson while
working in the lumber yard
was knocKed from a wagon and
had his anKle bruised and
sprained.
Ellis Burch, an old time Inde
pendence boy, now of Denver,
visited with Mrs. Martha Hill
and family and other relatives
this week.
R. H. Duganne left Tuesday
with Dr. Elmer Smith and wife
of Hillsboro, Clara and Madge
Embree, for the Yachats in an
auto. Dr. C. V. Murphy ar
rived Thursday to remain until
Dr. Duganne returns.
Jack Kinney and Floyd Brown
were on a motor cycle Wednes
day, going at about 35 miles an
hour over rough ground, had
their wheel to skid and were
thrown off and badly bruised up
but not seriously. Dr. Mclntire
dressed their bruises.
What came near being a bad
runaway happened Thursday
morning when one of Horst
Bros, teams started to make a
get away. J. L. Hanna ran and
grabbed a small boy off the wa
gon and Mr. Carlos grabbed the
team and after being dragged a
block stopped' it.
FINE STAND NEW
HOPS
Thos. Fennel has the prize new
hop yard of this county. He
planted twelve acres of hops this
spring and an investigation
showed only seven missing hills
in the twelve acres and the yard
is looking fine.
SHE TRAVELED ALL
ALONE
Miss Kathleen Skinner, the
eight year old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Claud Skinner, returned
this week from Tacoma by her
self. She spent two and a half
months visiting Miss'Edith West
in her home in Washington, and
made the trip home entirely
alone.
SURVEYERS PASS
THROUGH
W. H. Winstead passed through
this city the last of last week
with a complete outfit for con
struction work on the S. P. new
work between Junction City and
Fugene. The outfit consisted of
five wagons, 22 horses and mules,
scrapers, plows, and other con
struction material. wlil have

Wowen Dies
Mrs. Milner died at Ray
mond, Washington, of Pneu
monia last week and the re
mains were brought to
Buena Vista, through Inde
pendence Sunday for burial
in the cemetary at Buena
Vista.
Mrs. Milner was a daughter
of Mrs. Fannio Hall of
Hnena Vista, bhe leaves a
husband, n bov and uirl who
mourn her departure.
She had many friends in
Polk County who sympathize
with the family. Mr. Milner
and children came with the
remains.
