The engagement was clear July 20 at Gates Fire Hall, when more than 150 people turned out to the discuss consequences of low water levels. That meeting came on the heels of an an- nouncement that for the second consecutive year, water levels will directly affect boating and recreation at the lake. A year ago, late July water levels at Detroit Lake hit a 15- year low at 1,488-feet above sea level. This year’s projected 1,544 feet is the second lowest in that same time span, prompting locals to anticipate once again many grounded docks by Au- gust. The meeting’s attendance sheet filled with recreation and tourism advocates, along with elected officials and repre- sentatives from other agencies and entities involved with the is- sue. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Affairs Spe- cialist Michelle Helms said the Corps is charged with monitor- ing and regulating water levels and discharge. WOODWORTH STATESMAN JOURNAL It was another day of training for the 359th Basic Police Class, but on Thursday, the group of 38 recruits had an honorary member— a 7-year-old cancer survivor from Silverton. Rianna Riegelmann, along with her mother, Lori Riegelmann; father, Peter Riegelmann; and brother, Noah Rie- gelmann, joined in on the fun at the Oregon Public Safety Academy. She and Noah threw flash grenades with the SWAT team, played with a re- connaissance robot and gave com- mands to Salem police’s police dog En- zo. “She’s had so much fun,” Lori said. “We’re just overwhelmed with grati- tude.” Each basic police class has the op- portunity to pick a service project, said Lt. Andrew Bechdolt, a training coordinator for the Oregon Depart- ment of Public Safety Standards and Training. Some hold fundraisers for memorial projects or nonprofit agen- cies. The 359th class chose to sponsor a law enforcement day for Rianna and her family. Rianna was diagnosed with leuke- mia in March. While undergoing che- motherapy, she and her family met Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Bohrer, a volunteer with the Che- mo Pals mentoring program. Bohrer introduced the Riegelmann family to Forest Grove recruit Officer Austin Adams, who pitched the idea of having Salem Police Officer Marty Miranda lets Rianna pet police dog Enzo.
