Life in the 4A ● APPEAL TRIBUNE Valley y WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16, 2016 PHOTOS BY MOLLY J. SMITH/STATESMAN JOURNAL Community members light candles at a vigil for Douglas Bonham and Matthew Albrecht at Bethany Charter School in Silverton last Monday. Many students from Silverton High School, where Matthew Albrecht was a junior, attended the vigil. Vigil Continued from Page 1A thany, and Matthew Albrecht, a junior at Silverton High School. Substitute teach- ers were available to step in for grieving teachers. Bonham and Albrecht were killed in a single-vehicle crash shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday near the 32000 block of S Palm- er Road. The Clackamas County Sher- iff’s Office’s Clackamas County Sher- iff’s Office’s Criminal Reconstruction and Forensic Team responded to the scene and collected evidence. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Bonham had served as a mentor to Matthew for several years, said Andy Bellando, superintendent of the Silver Falls School District. The pair would fre- quently play basketball together and chat, according to family members. Bellando described Albrecht as a “very talented, very involved young man.” Not only did he take advanced courses and maintain a high GPA, Al- brecht competed on Silverton High School’s wrestling team, played on the football team and was a member of the jazz band, he said. Bethany Charter School Principal Kathy Frank said students wore red and black on Monday to honor Bonham, whose favorite team was the Trail Blaz- ers. “We are really coming together as a community,” she said. A candlelight vigil was held Monday evening at the charter school to honor Bonham and Albrecht, a former Bethany student. Frank said Bonham was a well-loved teacher and coach for the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. “Kids would get excited waiting to be in his class,” she said. Bonham taught at Bethany Charter School for eight years and worked as a business administrator for Silverton Gymnastics LLC, a local business his wife owns and coaches. “Doug was an incredible presence in all the lives he touched,” said Travis Loose, Bonham’s brother-in-law. “Many will miss him greatly.” Loose, a reporter for the Forest Grove News-Times and the Hillsboro Tribune out of Washington County, authored an online memorial for Bonham and invited friends, family members, students and others who knew him to post their memo- ries. “Douglas Bonham was truly the best teacher I’ve ever had,” wrote Jazmyn Lewis, a student at Bethany Charter School. “He wasn’t afraid to tell us about the real world, politics, or the dangers that are currently happening. He had a goal for each student in his class, and he would not give up until each of the goals Church Directory IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH 25 303 N. Bellando said Bonham was a fun, en- ergetic instructor who taught to the indi- vidual needs of his students. He had wanted to be teacher since he was a child. Bonham is survived by his wife, Megan, and two children. Email wmwoodwort@statesmanjour- nal.com, call (503) 399-6884 or follow on Twitter @wmwoodworth. ST. MARY’S CHURCH Church of God 814 N.
