"Skipper" was raised in the local area and attended C 'h i1 jn i n schools prior to enrolling at .T.I. "Skipper" says that most of his work at school is done in the body and fender simp, w here he and the other students work on their own ears. Welding and paint shop also fill an important place in the basic work ami for allied courses the students net a strong dose of physics, math, etc. Asked which of the courses he liked hest. Mclvin replied in a t pical laconic fashion : " "I like it all." As fur the education program "Skipper" thinks it's pretty good ami regrets that more trilul mem bers can't take advantage of it. He admits that without the bene fits of the program he probably wouldn't be able to o to school. After he completes the two year basic course in March, H5( "Skipper" would like to e,et some additional training in customizing. His strategy: "The more you net in it the better mi get." Kvciitually he wants to go to work in the body and fender field ami. if possible, set up a shop of his own. He points out: That'd be better than working fr wages." One of Skipper's main off campus interests is basketball. In the past two c;imiiin he has played with both the Vhiloijuiu and Sprague River townies. Last 'year he played with Sprague River in the Reservation Jaycecs all-Indian tournament and with the (hilo(juin ball club in the W hite Swan, Washington, invita tional Indian tournament. His team placed third in the latter event. This year he played with Chilo juin through the regular season and will go with them in the Jaycees Indian tournament, that is. if they get there. "Skipper" has some reservations about this, however, as they must first get by Heatty, .Sprague River, Klam ath Agency, and two other teams from l'hilopiin in the elimination tournament to be held March I, and 5. He points out that only one team out of this field will net to compete in the big tourney, whereas two were selected last year. However, "Skipper" -sees a bright spot for his club as they will be playing on the C.H.S. floor, where they compiled a good record during the season, and is hopeful that Ins team will t to appear in the grandiose plav-offs. - - -0 -'- On the ship going to Kurope last summer one of the officers ,.got angry about something, rushed to the speaking tube and yelled to one of the men below : "Is there a blithering idiot at the end of this tube?" "Not at this cud. sir," came the calm reply. Hrains are like wagons the lighter the load the more noise thev make. Helen. Nelson (Continued from Page 1) ready an associate member. He fore winding up her studies in June, 1959. she will put in two terms of extcrnship getting prac tical hospital training. Drawing some conclusions about the const Helen states: "I think the course is the best of fered anywhere and especially at O.T.I. At O.T.I, you get all prac tical work and don't have to take Kurdish and Hotany and all that stuff you never use.' As for the Klamath Education Program, Helen says: "The Indian Kducation Pro gram is one of the most wonder ful privileges ever offered to the Modoc and Klamath Tribes." (Helen emphasizes the fact that she is a Modoc.) After completion of Mew Tech. Helen is hopeful of getting some X-R.iy Technology training to enable her to get a better job. Kveu without such training, how ever, she has already received a job offer from Santiam Memorial Hospital. Her ambitions extend beyond working for wages, how ever: "I'd like to set up my own 1.1b too. That takes a little money. Depending on how termination goes I may set up my own lab." In regard to termination, Helen registered a plenitude of views: "Whatever way termination goes I hope to see that my people come out on the best end of it. hi my view l L. 587 was a mis take "to begin with because they didn't know exactly what they were getting into. If they'd con sidered more of it we might have had a bill that would have bene fited both the Tribe and the area around us. "1 would rather withdraw from the Tribe than have someone else make my decision for me. If I keep still there's someone who will make my decision for me to stay in tlu Tribe. If the Tribe is going to be considered as free citizens they should have their own say in whether they with draw or stay." Asked how she felt about any proposals that the Tribe be paid off in bonds, Helen "claimed that she feels "just as anyone else would feel. "If a person was given a chance to receive cash or bonds, they'd naturally take cash. I realize that there's some that won't invest wisely but there are a lot that will invest it wisely for their benefit and for the benefit oC their children."
