This year the City of Sisters will be showing appreciation for trees by celebrating Arbor Day with a proclamation reading by Mayor Ryan followed by a ceremonial tree plant- ing at Village Green Park. Sisters Elementary School kindergarten students will pitch in. This special “benchmark year” celebration, marking 10 years of receiving the Tree City USA Award and seven years receiving the Growth Award is set for Friday, April 28, 11:45 a.m. at Village Green Park. Science celebration underway in Sisters A slate of events are under- way in Sisters, all planned in support of the national March for Science on April 22, in Washington, D.C. and spon- sored locally by the Sisters Science Club. “We are grateful to the Sisters community for its support for science in the schools,” said Dr. Robert Collins, co-founder and presi- dent of the Sisters Science Club. “This celebration is a great opportunity to thank the community through these special events in sup- port of science education and the research that impacts all aspects of our lives.” Science lovers will meet to discuss “The Gene,” by Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of the Pulitzer Prize- winning “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.” The Wednesday, April 19 event will be at Paulina Springs Books at 6:30 p.m.; on Thursday, April 20, discussion of “The Gene” will be at Roundabout Books in Bend at 7 p.m. Both discussions will be facili- tated by Barbara Pettersen, a nationally certified genetic counselor. On April 20-21, the Deschutes Land Trust will host two hikes at Whychus Canyon Preserve to explore the recent Whychus Creek restoration. Hikers will tour the restoration site and explore the role science plays in mod- ern restoration and manage- ment of private lands. Hike leaders will include Martha Lussenhop of Sisters and Jen Zalewski, land steward for the See SCIENCE on page 20 PHOTO PROVIDED Sam Lewis, left, got a traditional shirt-tail trimming from instrtctor Sam Monte. Sisters student takes wing Every pilot remembers the first time they took to the skies without the security of an instructor sitting beside them: The solo. “It’s just me up here now.” That’s what 18-year-old Sam Lewis said to himself as he maneuvered the Outlaw Aviation Cessna 172 through his first solo flight last week. It was a day he will always remember. Lewis, a senior at Sisters High School, is the latest stu- dent to solo out of the Flight Science program offered at Sisters High School this year. The course is an elec- tive sequence running the entire year, integrating the study of aerodynamics, phys- ics, chemistry, navigation, and meteorology to prepare students to pass the rigor- ous FAA private pilot written exam. Lewis took the Flight Science course last year dur- ing his junior year, and then passed the FAA written exam. In addition to the aca- demic study of the ground school, students pursuing their private pilot license must train in an actual air- craft with a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI). Sam Monte, the flight instructor for Outlaw Aviation at the Sisters Airport, is a gradu- ate of the COCC Aviation Department. “Sam is an excellent stu- dent, and has a real passion for aviation. He’s an easy stu- dent to teach, and just loves to fly,” says Monte. The tradition of the instructor cutting the shirt tails of the student after their first solo originates from the days when pilots were trained in tandem aircraft, where the student sat in front of the instructor. Before enclosed cockpits and headsets allowed them to talk to each other, the only way an instructor could get the attention of the stu- dent from behind was to tug on their shirt tail. Once the student demonstrated he no longer needed the assistance of an instructor by soloing, the shirt tail was cut off. In order to earn a pri- vate pilot license, a student must complete several steps: they must pass a medical exam from an FAA-certified See LEWIS on page 25 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
