Michael Carriker will visit local schools to talk about the science and history of avia- tion. An aeronautical engi- neer, Capt. Carriker was the chief test pilot for Boeing’s “Dreamliner” and was at the controls for the 787’s first flight. Now Boeing’s Chief Engineering Project Pilot for New Airplane Product Development, Carriker is a former Navy fighter pilot and the recipient of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots 2010 award for outstanding profes- sional accomplishment in the conduct of flight testing. Concert benefits Circle of Friends A performance featuring the music of Melanie Rose Dyer and Daniel Cooper will benefit the mentorship pro- gram Circle of Friends on Thursday, April 20. Melanie recently move to Central Oregon from Nashville. Her music is full of life, incorporating a blend of soulful ballads, blues and Americana into her original compositions. One feattre was a concert in Fort Clatsop where they sang a piece of mtsic from a Lewis and Clark mini-mtsical. They also took a gtided totr of the Fort with an emphasis on the mtsic that the Lewis and Clark Expedition wotld have enjoyed. District offers smoke alarms The Sisters-Camp Sherman RFPD has received a donation of 40 smoke alarms from Kidde Fire Safety. Kidde’s mission is to provide safety solutions that protect people and prop- erty from the effects of fire and its related hazards, and the company is committed to educating families about fire and carbon monoxide safety. The donation is crucial in helping the District’s Fire Corps members continue their smoke alarm cam- paign projects within the homes today, that number is less than three minutes. Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District Fire Corps members are available to assist homeowners with checking their smoke alarms by appointment. New battery powered alarms are available for free, as well as replace- ment batteries for wired units. If your alarms are older than 10 years, they should be replaced. The latest smoke alarm statistics for Oregon show that in 2014 there were 1,774 injuries and 30 fatali- ties from residential struc- ture fires. Of the 30 fatali- ties, in only three instances there were working smoke alarms. Also, according to Underwriters Laboratory (UL), 40 years ago residents had approximately 17 min- utes to escape a house fire.
