DELICIOUS!
Finding a fresh tree is as easy HEALTHY
After shopping, stop by and re-energize with our
as the snap of a needle
delicious baked goods and nutritious smoothies!
By Kym Pokorny
CORVALLIS — You’re ready to get out
the lights, the garlands, the baubles and balls,
but don’t get ahead of yourself.
“Know how to choose a fresh tree and how
to keep it that way or you’ll be disappointed,”
said Chal Landgren, a Christmas tree special-
ist with Oregon State University’s Extension
Service. “It’s also not safe to have a dried-out
tree in the house, so it’s doubly important to
know what to do.”
A lot of information swirls around the issue
of Christmas tree freshness.
Q: How do I know a tree is fresh when I
purchase it?
A: Choose a tree that looks green and
healthy with needles that snap like a fresh
carrot. Shake it a few times to get rid of old
needles.
Q: Do I need to re-cut the stem after I get
my tree home?
A: Yes, if more than 24 hours has elapsed
since the stem was last cut. The fresh cut
helps water uptake, and the sooner you
can get the tree into water, the fresher
it will be.

Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration
Mark the advent of Christmas with joyous music from the
Transfiguration Choir. The choir has just returned from the
Vienna Advent Festival, where they shared their music with
Austria (see story, page 15); now they are bringing it back
to Sisters. Each Sunday they will perform songs they sang
in Vienna, culminating in two Christmas Eve services on
December 24, at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. At the 4 p.m. service, chil-
dren will reenact the Nativity.
On Christmas Eve, the choir will sing “Patapan”; “Good
News, Amen!”; “O, Holy Night”; “Alleluia”; and “Joy to the
World/O Come All Ye Faithful!” Director Stephanie King
says they will also sing “Kling Glockchen Kling” in German.
There will be many songs for those in attendance to sing as well.
Raise your voice in song to mark a joyous ringing in of the holiday at The Episcopal Church
of the Transfiguration.
