Library art show is a ‘zoo’
bill gives local Habitat
chapter financial boost
By sue stafford

There is a special “zoo” in
the library community room
created by children who have
participated in the Super Ani-
mals – Super Powers summer
program. The zoo is part of the
Friends of the Sisters Library
(FOSL) August/September art
exhibit.
Paige Bentley-Flannery,
community librarian, intro-
duced the idea of super ani-
mals to children during story
time this summer, to the after-
school kids before school
ended, to the children in sum-
mer school who make weekly
visits to the library, and to
youngsters who come once
a week from Sisters Park &
Recreation District.
Although art is an integral
part of the library’s programs
for children, this August and
first half of September is the
first time the children’s art-
work has been displayed as
part of the FOSL monthly art
exhibits. It will also be part of
the Fourth Friday Art Stroll
on August 28 at the library.
Families with children are
encouraged to stop by, view
the super-animals exhibit, and
receive free popsicles.
The children were encour-
aged to focus on a particular
“super animal” and decide
how it would save the day. On
their own, or as a family proj-
ect, they made pictures and
named their super-animals
and decided what superpow-
ers they possessed. There are

Last week, Governor Kate
Brown helped Sisters Habitat
for Humanity keep about
$10,000 a year in its coffers.
The governor signed
House Bill 2690, which pro-
vides a property tax exemp-
tion for proven nonprofit
housing developers that
acquire land for the purpose
of building low-income hous-
ing. HB 2690 allows non-
profits to hold the land tax-
exempt for seven years from
the time of application.
The bill was co-sponsored
by local Rep. Gene Whisnant,
and board members and
staff of Sisters Habitat for
Humanity traveled to Salem
earlier this year to lobby for
its passage.
“For us it means that the
17 lots we have now, we
don’t have to pay property
taxes on,” said Sisters Habitat
Executive Director Sharlene
Weed.
That amounts to about
$10,000 per year that can go
back toward building houses,
Weed told The Nugget.
Construction costs for
a Habitat home run about
$70,000 she said.
Seeing the bill take effect
was good news for the local
affiliate, which saw taxes on
some of its lots double last
year.
“It’ll really help,” Weed
said.

drawings of super-turtles, ele-
phant, bunny, duck and others.
The materials used to cre-
ate the drawings included
chalk, pencils, markers, beads,
and natural materials like dirt
and leaves. Superanimals are
still being created outside the
library on the sidewalk using
chalk. Children are invited to
stop by to view them and try
their hand at creating their
own.
A number of children
recently visited the library for
Super Academy Day, dressed
in costumes and capes depict-
ing their favorite superhero.
All of these activities are in
support of the 24/7 summer
reading program called Every
Hero Has a Story. If you
haven’t already, stop by the
library and pick up a card on
which to record your child’s
reading at least 24 minutes
every day. There will be
free books and other prizes
awarded to 24/7 readers.
Off the Wall, an exhibit of
artwork literally coming off
the walls of members of the
FOSL art committee, is on
display in the computer room
from August 1-September 15.
A variety of art media and
subject matter are available
for viewing, including work
from a number of well-known
local artists.
