Wednesday, June 24, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Festival will raffle an extraordinary guitar The Sisters Folk Festival (SFF) will raffle an extraor- dinary Breedlove Guitar to mark its 20th year during the festival set for September 11-13. The guitar, a custom C20/ CM by Breedlove Guitars, has a red cedar top and quilted mahogany back and sides, a sunburst finish, and a custom inlay of “SFF 2015,” with a vintage microphone in keep- ing with this year’s poster image by Dennis McGregor. It is valued at $8,000. The wood used to produce the guitar back and sides is from “The Tree,” a legend- ary Honduran mahogany tree felled 50 years ago. The wood was donated by musician and songwriter Jay Howlett. Jay is an ardent supporter of the Sisters Folk Festival and, along with his record company “Blah Blah, Woof Woof” and label-mate Chuck McCabe, he was a key player in its inception. The legend of The Tree began almost 50 years ago, when a group of loggers deep in the Chiquibul Jungle of what is now Belize, discov- ered a giant mahogany tree, 100 feet tall, with a 10-foot base and spiraled bark that See GuItar on page 30 Miller family quilts a piece of quilt show history By Jim cornelius News Editor Quilting is a traditional art — one that is continuing to grow and evolve as artists press into new frontiers. Yet even the most avant- garde quilter can appreciate the extraordinary detail-work of hand-stitched traditional quilts. Visitors to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show this July will have an opportunity to see such work on display at Beacham’s Clock Company. Family quilts belong- ing to local contractor and Sisters Rodeo Association President Glenn Miller will be on display there through the entire month of July. These quilts have an addi- tional touch of traditional res- onance. They first hung on the streets of Sisters back in 1975. “A couple of ’em were in the first quilt show 40 years ago,” Miller told The Nugget. The quilts come out of the Mennonite and Amish traditions. “My mom was a Mennonite and all my aunts and uncles were Amish,” Miller said. A couple of the quilts on display in this year’s show were made by Miller’s mother. Quilt Show offers ‘Timeless Tapestry’ The 40th Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is about to roll out in Sisters. The theme of the 2015 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) is “A Timeless Tapestry” — a story told through weaving fabric and thread. This year, SOQS hon- ors the quilters, instructors, volunteers, artists, businesses, donors, sponsors and indus- try leaders whose help and support during the past four decades have transformed the town of Sisters into a liv- ing tapestry every second Saturday in July since 1975. The 40th anniversary event is being presented by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Robert Kaufman Co, Inc. is a purveyor of quilting fabrics and textiles for retailers and manufacturers. Kaufman Co. is a fabric supplier to many industries, including retail & quilting, home decor, bridal, uniforms, and the apparel industry. Highlighting the 40th anni- versary celebration will be the return visit from the Quilters of Gee’s Bend presented by The Roundhouse Foundation. Recently, three of the quilters of Gee’s Bend received a 2015 National Heritage Fellowship, the nation’s highest award for folk and traditional arts. Mary Lee Bendolph, Loretta Pettway, and Lucy Mingo, three of the chief quilters of Gee’s Bend, are among the group of artists chosen for this year’s award. “Roundhouse Foundation has been a LoneStar Sponsor of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show these many years because it meets our mis- sion to encourage commu- nity enrichment through the arts in Central Oregon,” said Kathy Deggendorfer. “The Roundhouse Foundation wanted to support the Quilters of Gee’s Bend return to Sisters for their third visit to continue to build our friendships and the roundhouse foundation wanted to support the Quilters of Gees Bend return to Sisters ... to continue to build our friendships and artistic relationships with these artists... — Kathy deggendorfer artistic relationships with these artists, who are national treasures.” See QuIlt SHoW on page 21 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
