Wednesday, May 13, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Three candidates interviewed for council By Sue Stafford Correspondent C h u c k Ry a n , A m y Burgstahler, and Bill Hall all threw their hat in the ring for the Sisters City Council seat vacated by McKibben Womack. City Council mem- bers interviewed the can- didates in their Thursday- morning workshop last week. Each possesses an impres- sive résumé and wide-ranging experience that would serve the City well. When asked what motivated him to apply for the vacant seat, Ryan cited his love affair with Sisters. He moved here to retire and has “lots of energy,” and wants to stay involved. He has a long career in finan- cial management, believing it important to look at all sides of an issue or project. He likes to dissect and analyze issues, and then build consensus. Important issues that Ryan sees facing the City in the next two to three years include “the need for Council to regain the trust and respect of the popu- lace.” He believes that sound finances are important, and he would be able to offer his strong financial background as needed. He cited economic See COuNCIL on page 14 one Arm Bandit headed back to sisters The most popular act in Sisters Rodeo history is com- ing back to celebrate the rodeo’s 75th anniversary. The One Arm Bandit is bringing his black mouth cur hounds, horse or mule, and buffalo to town. John Payne, the One Arm Bandit, has won the national Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Specialty Act of the Year 12 times, including 2014. There is just nothing else like this performance, an unbelievable display of com- munication between a man and his animals. Wherever he performs, he steals the show. Whip in hand, dogs at his bidding, he herds buffalo from horse or muleback onto the bed of a truck and even on the roof of a stock trailer. He will also take his act to the Sisters Rodeo Parade, sometimes in a breathtaking performance with his horse on the roof of a moving stock trailer. John Payne was born on an Oklahoma ranch. The cowboy has spent his entire life on a horse with dogs at his side. He partners with his dad and four brothers as ranchers in his home state, but his showman- ship keeps him on the road See PaYNe on page 31 photo by Gary miller These women and more put in hard work at Habitat homesites in Sisters. sawdust flies during Women Build By diane goble Correspondent It’s not often that you walk onto a construction site and come upon a bunch of women in pink T-shirts up on ladders, wielding hammers and wrangling two-by-fours. But for three days last week that’s how it was on East Cascade Avenue, where two townhomes were under con- struction as part of National Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Week. Fifty female volunteers from around Sisters Country strapped on their tool belts and hard hats, picked up their hammers and power tools, and did a smashing good job framing and sheeting, helping to build affordable housing for two Sisters families. The Maxwell family and the Spain family will be living next door to each other in their respective new two- and three-bedroom townhomes “by September 1,” according to team leader Larry Lennon. Lennon enjoys work- ing with the women volun- teers, who call him the “go- to guy,” because they can “admit when they don’t know something and are better at taking direction. Men tend to think they’re supposed to know everything and don’t ask questions, which can lead to mistakes that have to be redone.” The women who volun- teer are given some basic training and safety instruc- tions through Lowe’s national partnership with Habitat for Humanity, and a number of the women, who have been volunteering for Women Build two or more years, have acquired various skills in home construction. Several of the volunteers work with new homeowner Kristina Maxwell at US Bank, which encourages volunteer- ism among its employees. She has them writing their names on the studs of the rooms they work on so they are always part of her expe- rience as a homeowner. She spoke about what a privilege it was “to be working along- side these wonderful people.” Judy Osborne is the Maxwell family partner from Habitat, who guides them through the process and is a huge part of their journey to home ownership. She had decided when she retired that she wanted to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. She finds it “very rewarding to see such dedication from See WOMeN BuILd on page 24 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
