Wednesday, April 29, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Guitar-maker and music fest team up By Jim Cornelius News Editor It’s a natural harmony: a nationally renowned premier guitar maker and a nation- ally renowned music festival. The duo has come together in Sisters to hit a sweet note of mutual support and benefit. Preston Thompson Guitars has made a rapid and impres- sive mark in the world of quality acoustic instruments since opening its manufactur- ing facility on Main Avenue in Sisters at the end of 2013. It’s a return to a career that Thompson started in the 1970s, recreating the classic American sound produced by Golden Age Martin Guitars of the 1930s. Meanwhile, the Sisters Folk Festival has built a rep- utation as one of the finest music festivals in the country, attractive to audiences and art- ists alike for the beauty of the setting, the quality of the ven- ues and the commitment to the music. Next week, the festival will host its “other” major event — the annual My Own Two Hands (MOTH) fund- raiser, which features an art stroll and party on Friday, See Moth on page 15 community prayer breakfast set in Sisters Members of the Sisters community will gather in fel- lowship on Thursday, May 7, for the third annual Sisters Community Prayer Breakfast sponsored by Sisters Christian Academy. Doors open at 7 a.m. at the Sisters Community Church auditorium and the program will end by 8:45 a.m. The event will include a conti- nental breakfast and feature regional participants. The event is held in conjunc- tion with the 64th National Day of Prayer, which is cel- ebrated each year on the first Thursday of May. The keynote speaker is Olympian Dave Johnson, bronze medal winner in the decathlon in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Johnson was part of Reebok’s Dan & Dave advertising campaign leading up to the 1992 Olympics. He was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Dave presently is a moti- vational speaker, author of “Aim High: An Olympic Decathlete’s Inspiring Story,” and serves as director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This year’s program facili- tator is John Roberts. Roberts See BreAkfAst on page 31 photo provided sisters little league play got underway this month. Scholarship fund gets kids on the field Since its inception in 2010, which grew from a terrible tragedy for a Sisters fam- ily in 2009, the Ian Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund has helped more than 75 ath- letes play baseball in Sisters. Approximately 125 girls and boys play Little League ball in Sisters, and the Ian Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund has been able to scholarship nearly 10 percent of those players every year. Ian “Fergie” Ferguson, a standout athlete for the Sisters Outlaws (1997) died in a 2009 car accident in Fresno, California. Many of Ian’s co- workers asked the family how they could honor his memory. Ian loved baseball and Little League, and a scholarship fund was started in his name in 2010.
