Wednesday, January 21, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y STA to hold annual meeting next week By Craig f. eisenbeis Correspondent The Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) will be holding their annual meeting next Thursday on January 29, at 7 p.m. in The Pines Clubhouse at the west end of Sisters. Even though this is the club’s annual meet- ing, the public is welcome. In addition to the meeting agenda, the STA will be hav- ing Marv Lang of the U.S. Forest Service as the guest speaker for the event. Although Lang’s official title with the Forest Service is Recreation Forester for the Deschutes National Forest, he prefers to be known simply as the “Trails Guy.” The topic of his talk will be “Sustainable Trails.” For his part, Lang is look- ing forward to addressing the STA. “The Sisters Trails Alliance is, and has been, a consistently solid partner with the U.S. Forest Service on the Sisters Ranger District,” he said. “They have a unique mission that focuses on trails within a radius of the city of Sisters, which allows them to be involved in trails-related projects and policy from side- walks to primitive trails.” See MeetING on page 26 photo by Jerry baldoCk lauren taylor studied the biology of strawberries with mom, tammy, at the 2013 sisters science fair. Science club looks toward active 2015 By Jim Cornelius News Editor Trail users to convene in Sisters By Craig f. eisenbeis Correspondent “It’s been nearly two years since we’ve had local trail group leaders and representa- tives together, and I’m new and would like to get to know everyone who’s involved in local trail-use issues,” said Amy Racki, recreation team leader for the Sisters Ranger District. Racki is the Forest Service’s new representa- tive for trails in the Sisters area and wants to meet with trail users at the Forest Service office Wednesday, January 21. She explained, “The mis- sion for this group at this time is to bring together a diverse array of trail enthusiasts from Sisters and surrounding com- munities to respectfully com- municate, coordinate, and col- laborate on trail planning and management topics of interest to the Sisters community and visitors to the area.” Racki is looking for input from every type of Forest Service trail enthusiast, including hiking, cycling, equestrian, cross-country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, dirt bike, and ATV trail users. See traIl users on page 23 In the short five years from its inception under the guid- ance of a handful of volun- teers, the Sisters Science Club has become one of those orga- nizations that has a profound impact on lives in Sisters Country, and especially in the schools. Co-founder Bob Collins notes that the action has shifted from being driven by initiatives of himself and other volunteers. “The creativity and energy has really shifted to the teach- ers themselves,” Collins said. “They’re coming up with the energy and ideas. We chal- lenged them to come up with the ideas and that’s where the sparks are coming from.” The most visible place where the community can see the sparks catch and kindle into a blaze is at the Sisters Science Club’s Annual Science Fair, set this year for Saturday, February 21. Students, teachers, and adult mentors combine to create numerous interactive displays that entertain and excite as well as educate. There will be an array of experiments involving elec- tricity, chemistry, biology and engineering. Healthy-living and green-energy programs will have displays from green- house gardening to organic vegetables in the schools’ Seed-To-Table program. The planetarium will be set up and students, teachers, and astron- omy volunteers will be on hand to explain the night sky. This year, the traditional catapult challenge conducted by Rob Corrigan in the Design, Construct, Compete event has been replaced by an event featuring mousetrap cars. The cars must travel a certain distance, then stop within a circle. Corrigan designed the challenge to test engineering skills of students, though anyone can enter. Sisters Elementary School will be in the midst of an inventors’ convention dur- ing the fair, so students will bring their projects for dis- play. They are encouraged to talk with visitors to the fair about their ideas for improv- ing society through invention and innovation. Middle and high school classes will bring out the things they are working on in their science classes. Awards will be doled out to winners of the fair’s sci/art contest, which com- bines scientific vision with artistic expression through photography. The club is also in the midst of a speaker series, with talks focusing on the subject See sCIeNCe on page 21 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Woodworkers Guild 1st Monday. 541-610-9022.
