Wednesday, January 21, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Redeemables only for pet donations The Furry Friends Foundation bottle and can drive for 2014 was a great success. “We raised over $3,000 in revenue from the drive,” said founder Kiki Dolson. “That translates into more help for Sisters-area pets and their families, from more money for spay and neuters to keeping the pet-food bank stocked.” Dolson thanked everyone who brings their bottles and cans for the charity to redeem. She offered special thanks for the participation from Eagle Crest homeowners who drop their bottles and cans off with Robert Roth, who collects them there. “Also thank you to Long Hollow Ranch with Daka Thomas’ help and their dona- tion of bottles and cans from their wedding events,” Dolson said. “The biggest thank-you goes to Vern Rendon for doing the dirty job of sorting and re- bagging all of them for us.” The bottles and cans are redeemed through the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative program. However, there seems to be some confusion on what can be accepted. Dolson reports that “many bags of recyclable, non-redeemable items have been left. “We cannot redeem milk cartons, bleach bottles, jelly jars, wine bottles, soup cans, anything that would normally go to the recycling center.” The bottles and cans must be labeled with OR 5¢ to be redeemable. That includes soda, water, beer bottles and cans, anything a customer could normally redeem for 5¢. If items are not labeled with OR 5¢ please take them to the recycle center on Sisters Park Drive. “The drive continues for 2015, so please help raise funds by dropping redeemable bottle and cans off (in closed plastic bags, please) in the blue recycle bins on the front west porch at The Nugget,” Dolson said. Animal center to hold orientations Are you looking for an opportunity to give back to the community in 2015? If so, BrightSide Animal Center in Redmond can use your help. “We depend on volun- teers to supplement our small staff,” said BrightSide volun- teer coordinator Sana Hayes of Sisters. “Volunteers foster kittens, puppies and other pets who need home care; staff the front desk; walk dogs; staff the thrift store; sort bottles and cans for recycling; answer phones; help with publicity; take adoptable dogs to off- campus events; and more. Some volunteers donate a lit- tle time, others a lot. No mat- ter what your skills and inter- ests, we have a job for you.” They are holding an ori- entation session for new vol- unteers on January 31. Call the shelter at 541-923-0882 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, or email volunteer@ brightsideanimals.org, to reg- ister. Registration is required. Plan on arriving 15 minutes early to fill out the volun- teer application before the session. You can also down- load the application from www.brightsideanimals.org and bring the completed appli- cation with you. Quality Truck-mounted CARPET CLEANING Quality Cleaning 13 years in ! Last year, Sisters’ extreme winter storm in February crushed the greenhouse the club and others had worked hard to create at Sisters Middle School under tons of snow. The science club and Sisters Kiwanis, with support from businesses and volun- teers in the community, is close to ready to replace the structure with a new one. Collins said the greenhouse will be relocated to Sisters High School to be more acces- sible for the high-school- based Seed-to-Table program. “It’s kind of an off-the- shelf steel tubing thing with plastic covering over it,” Collins said. The manufacturer will deliver the unit already assembled, but it will be up to Sisters folks to install it. Collins said that ENERGYneering Solutions, 21 Inc. has expressed inter- est in doing the installation and the greenhouse could be tied in with the school’s biomass boiler, the installa- tion of which the company spearheaded. “We’re going to try as hard as we can to get the kids involved in the installation,” Collins said. “At least some of them. That’s a great engineer- ing project.” Volunteers are always wel- comed by the Sisters Science Club. Collins emphasizes that it’s open to anybody with energy and a curious mind. You don’t have to be a scientist. “You don’t have to do cal- culus to volunteer with the sci- ence club,” Collins said, with a wry smile. In fact, one of the more attractive aspects of involve- ment is that volunteering cre- ates learning opportunities as well as teaching opportunities.
